The IUPUI Graduate Mentoring Center, with support from the President’s Diversity Initiative, will facilitate Faculty Mentoring Dialogues during the 2018-2019 school year. The dialogues will be facilitated by Randall Roper, Director of the IUPUI Graduate Mentoring Center and Associate Professor of Biology; and Etta Ward, Assistant Vice Chancellor for Research Development in the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research.
Training and discussion modules covered were developed by the National Research Mentoring Network (NRMN) including: Maintaining Effective Communication, Aligning Expectations, Assessing Understanding, Addressing Equity and Inclusion, Fostering Independence, Promoting Professional Development and Articulating your Mentoring Philosophy and Plan. The training is intended to help faculty strengthen their mentoring of students through discussion and sharing of best practices.
The training will be given in eight, hour long sessions held on Thursdays from 8-9 am on Sept 13, Oct 4, Nov 8, Dec 6, Jan 17, Feb 7, March 7 and April 4 in the University Library.
Space is limited to 12 faculty.
To facilitate informative discussion, faculty of all ranks with a desire to improve mentoring individually and across campus are encouraged to apply for these dialogues. Faculty who participate in all sessions, and mentor a student during this time will receive a $500 stipend.
To apply for the Faculty Mentoring Dialogues program, faculty must:
- On the application, address a paragraph to each topic explaining: a) what you expect to gain from these dialogues, b) unique perspective(s) you will bring to these dialogues and c) how these dialogues will help in your development as a mentor
- Commit to attend all sessions
- Apply by September 7, 2018. We will notify you of acceptance by Tuesday, September 11.
