The Department of Kinesiology is offering a PhD in Exercise Science (EXSC). That is a full time, face-to-face, research-based doctoral program administered through the IU Graduate School. The goals of the program are to train doctoral research scholars capable of creating and disseminating knowledge in the field of EXSC. The program will provide training through a rigorous, mentor-based interdisciplinary curriculum with pedagogical and research experiences, and conduct applied and translational science research focusing on EXSC for the purposes of enhancing and prolonging quality of life.
Ninety (90) credit hours of graduate study will be required for the doctoral degree. Students take coursework on campus, pass qualifying exams, defend a dissertation proposal, then research, write, and defend a final dissertation. You should plan to complete coursework, pass exams, and defend your dissertation proposal within three years of full-time enrollment.
Applicants may be admitted into the Ph.D. program with a Master's in Kinesiology or related field, or directly after completing undergraduate study in exercise science, kinesiology or related field. Applicants must maintain a GPA of at least 3.25/4.0 for the final 60 semester hours of undergraduate study, and 3.2/4.0 for all previous graduate work to be considered. GRE scores are recommended as one component to strengthen the prospective student’s application. Additionally, all candidates must submit a sample of their own scientific writing from published or unpublished work. Three letters of recommendation submitted in support of the individual will accompany this package of material. Finally, each individual applicant will be required to interview with a graduate faculty member involved in the admission process.
One hundred percent of our Ph.D. students, who are enrolled full-time, will receive financial support in the form of tuition, health insurance, and an assistantship stipend. To be eligible, you will be required to work 20 hours per week as a teaching or research assistant.
