Timeline for Graduation

Keep track of your deadlines and graduation requirements as you progress toward your degree. Listed here are general degree requirements for all Indiana University graduate students.

Degree requirements for Purdue University degrees offered on the IUPUI campus can be found on the Purdue University website.

Be sure to check with your program or department for any additional requirements or deadlines. Detailed deadlines specific to theses and dissertations are listed in Theses and Dissertations.

  • Master’s Students in Indiana University Programs

    1. Verify that all your transfer credits posted to your transcript.
    2. Complete your coursework.
    3. Fill out the Master's Application for Advanced Degree eDoc form. Once submitted, you can check this for to track the approval process
    4. Once you’ve applied for your degree, verify that your name does not appear on the University Checklist. The registrar will not release your diploma or transcripts until all entries are cleared.
    5. Verify through OneStart the correct spelling of your name, your correct student home address, and your preferred email address. Please note, the Graduate Office will email you when your diploma is ready. Your diploma will be sent to the address you indicate is your student home address.
    6. Verify all R and I grades have been completed and converted to actual grades.
    7. If completing a thesis, schedule a format check with the IU Graduate School recorder in the Graduate Office. Learn how »

  • Ph.D. Students in Indiana University Programs

    Year 1
    1. During your first semester at IUPUI, submit the final transcript of all undergraduate and graduate degrees earned before entry into your Ph.D. program.
    2. Verify all transfer credits are posted to your transcript.
    3. International students, complete any needed English for Academic Purposes (EAP) courses. Read the requirements »
    4. Form your advisory committee. Your program or department can tell you more about how to choose the best advisory committee for you.
    Years 2-4
    1. Complete your coursework.
    2. Pass your qualifying exams. After you pass your qualifying exams you must enroll for class each fall and spring semester thereafter, with the exception of summers, until you graduate. If you are graduating during the summer, you must enroll for at least one session during that summer.
    3. Once you’ve completed your coursework and passed your exams, submit your Nomination to Candidacy form. This form must be approved by the University Graduate School at least eight months before graduation and before the Nomination of Research Committee form can be approved.
    4. Submit your Nomination of Research Committee form. Your nomination form must be approved six months before you defend your dissertation
    Years 4-5
    1. Complete and properly format your dissertation, and schedule your defense with your committee.
    2. Schedule a format check for your dissertation with the IU Graduate School recorder in the Graduate Office at IU at least 45 days before you plan to defend. Learn more »
    3. Submit a one-page dissertation defense announcement to the Graduate Office at IUPUI at least 30 days before the defense. Make sure all members of your committee have copies of your work at that time. Medical science students must submit a copy of the defense announcement to the School of Medicine Graduate Office, MS 207.
    4. Defend your dissertation in front of your research committee. At your defense, have your committee sign your acceptance page and abstract.
    5. Verify all R and I grades have been completed and converted to actual grades.
